Morgan Kaufmann Publishers was founded in 1984 and was privately held until 1998.

In June 1998, it was acquired by Harcourt General, Inc. Morgan Kaufmann became an imprint of Academic Press, a subsidiary of Harcourt, and the publishing program of AP Professional, another imprint of Academic Press, was combined with the Morgan Kaufmann publishing program.
